Cookbook Clubs: August 2019
So, most months, I publish the monthly roundup of cookbook club selections without any commentary, but this month promises to be a great one. In fact, I’m declaring it the best #cookbookclub month ever!!
Why am I excited? There are so many great titles to choose from. For one there’s no overlap between clubs (except in the case of Vietnamese Food Any Day which is a collaboration between Bebe and Kristina from the Get Cooking Cookbook Club and Appetite for Humanity Cookbook Club, respectively). Secondly, there are great options for vegetable focused cooking—Vegetables Unleashed, and David Tanis’ Market Cooking, perfect for this time of year when summer vegetables are available in abundance. Third, there are some serious food experts among the authors here, who better to learn from than Alice Waters, David Tanis, and Andrea Nguyen. Fourthly, the Food 52 clubs are returning to past books, any past book, and since I’m never ready to move on at the end of the month it’s a great opportunity to revisit old favorites (I’m particularly excited about Salt Fat Acid Heat, My Paris Kitchen, Food52 Genius Recipes, and Tartine All Day.)
And lastly let’s talk about Vegetables Unlashed and just how awesome José Andrés is (he’s nominated for a Nobel Peace Prize for goodness sake). This book is delightful, organized seasonally with a wide range of dishes inspired by his travels around the world, plus, ideas and suggestions for making those dishes your own, and essays and profiles of change makers in the food world to inspire you to eat more vegetables and think about where your food comes from. All that and it doesn’t take itself too seriously—it’s loaded with fun. Plus, Andrés is a true cookbook lover proving readers with a short list of recommended titles, and this note that begins the the headnote for Trinxat, a potato and cabbage dish from Catalonia:
“I feel the same way when I look at my collection of cookbooks as I do when I look up at the stars—amazement at the size and beauty of the universe, but sadness when I realize I can never know it all.”
This guy is one of us (a true cookbook lover), and this may just be my favorite new book of the year.
Happy cookbook clubbin’ everyone!
